Instead of laying multiple images on top of each other, as in a traditional collage, Photoshop allows you to place one image directly on top of another. You can replace, duplicate, rotate, move, scale, and distort the top image to create a more sophisticated piece of art.
One of the best parts of using Photoshop is the layer-based editing system. I talk more about layers in this chapter.
Other tools that can be used for image manipulation are available. You can place drawing tools, transform tools, and masking tools on the image and draw lines and shapes to help compose the image. I talk more about drawing tools in Chapter 6. You can also use more traditional graphics tools to help you create and manipulate the image. Most images are composed using a traditional pencil, ink, or paint, so I discuss those tools and more in Chapter 10.
Knowing how to use the tools is an important step in creating images in Photoshop, and I talk more about that in Chapters 4 through.
Understanding the Simple Photoshop Workflow
The Photoshop file system works very similarly to most other graphics software: You work on files and then save the files in folders. When you have finished manipulating the files, you save them.
Saving a file
To save a file, choose File⇒Save or press Ctrl+S (⌘-S). When you save, you choose what to save it as, the type of file, and a location, where it’s stored.
You can save images in several ways. You can save the image as a TIFF, Photoshop (.psd) file, JPEG, or any other file format that’s supported by your current operating system.
You can save your image as a JPEG if you want to do it that way or are the recipient of the image. Saving as a JPEG means that only a small amount of data is transferred, and the quality of the image remains high. It can be saved in colors and grayscale. I discuss JPEGs in more detail in the “Choosing image file types” section, later in this chapter.
Most people save the most common image format as a TIFF, which stands for Tagged Image File Format. Like a JPEG, a TIFF is also a small image file, but it can store more than eight times as much data as a JPEG. Most operating systems store both TIFF and JPEG files. The Basic tab of the Elements Preferences window
Layout
Elements comes with a default layout with a toolbox, an image window, a canvas, a color palettes and a few other panels. New users are very likely to find this layout helpful. To open the Preferences window, go to the Edit menu and select Preferences. Then use the Basic tab to adjust the layout settings.
With the default layout, the Elements panel is accessible by clicking the tab under the toolbox. To change the layout settings, select the Canvas as the primary view tab and then drag-and-drop the Elements panel anywhere in your desktop.

In the Photo Editor workspace, you can edit photos and create (or edit) images in different arrangements of layers. Elements usually comes with one main document containing one or more layers. The default layout has a separate panel next to the main document window.
To open the Photo Editor workspace, go to the File menu and select Open from an Organizer. Select the Photo Editor workspace as the default workspace. Then go to the Edit menu and select Workspaces to open the Elements’ workspace menu.
You can also open and close the Photo Editor workspace from the Photo Editor

[Psychological and psychiatric aspects of tuberculosis in hospitalized patients].
Most existing research on tuberculosis focuses on its medical aspects without taking into account its psychological effects. In hospitalized patients, the effects on the patient’s emotional and cognitive functioning have long been known. However, recent research has revealed that the emergence of contagious tuberculosis is accompanied by psychopathological symptoms and disorders that, in turn, can affect the course of tuberculosis. This paper reviews the current knowledge about the psychological and psychiatric effects of tuberculosis in the context of hospitals. The literature suggests that patients with tuberculosis often experience an exacerbation of existing psychological disorders, including anxiety and depression, and that the occurrence of depression appears to be more frequent than in the general population. Some evidence suggests that in some patients depression increases during an episode of pulmonary tuberculosis; this could be because the patients interpret the disease as a threat to their self-image. Data about post-traumatic symptoms in hospitalized patients with tuberculosis are still scarce. However, research in this field has just begun. The most critical area for future research is the study of the effect of the treatment of tuberculosis on the occurrence of psychological and psychiatric symptoms and disorders.
